MPG or CPM

Let's face it, we love our cars and as long as we can afford to drive them, we will. There are many different types of cars, from sport cars to family sedans. We buy the car that best fits our lifestyle and transportation needs. Some cost more than others, what is common is the underlying cost of gasoline. Depending on the fuel efficiencies of the specific car and how we choose to drive it, the cost per mile varies considerably.

If we exclude the purchase cost of the different cars and concentrate on just the energy cost to propel all cars, then it is more appropriate to view "Cost Per Mile" (CPM) vs. "Miles Per Gallon" (MPG). Today, there are cars that are propelled by gasoline, diesel, natural gas, bio-fuels, electricity, hydrogen, and compressed air.

  • What is the $dollar cost of the energy store used?
  • What is the energy depletion rate of these technologies relative to the distances we can travel?
  • What is the consumer cross-over price from gas to electric?

Our analysis suggests that $2.00 per gallon is the leading edge of the curve where electric fuel vehicles begin to equal fossil fuel vehicles from a cost per mile perspective. (Fuel consumption cost, not total cost of ownership)
