Coming 2010

Can we really afford it?

We applaud President Obama’s plan to put 1 Million hybrid vehicles on the road by 2015.

However, it is not near enough. It will not make a dent on the country’s dependence on foreign oil and the outflow of US petro dollars. Even with 1 Million Gas-Electric hybrids that get 60 mpg, these hybrids will still consume 7.9M Barrels (42 gallons/barrel) of imported oil and $500M+ in petro dollars will continue to exit our country each year that they are in service.

The service lifespan of these hybrids vehicles is projected to be 15 years. That’s 119M barrels and $8.5B in hard currency that will continue to flow to the politically volatile Middle East.

With the average lifespan of a gas powered car at 10 years, the turnover from gas to electric for 20% of these consumers is projected to be 25-30+ years.

The cost of hybrid vehicles that only provide a 10-25% increase in MPG (36 mpg), but come with a 30-50% price tag premium are a major reason behind this slow turnover rate. In order to make a serious dent in our consumption of imported oil, we must also initiate and fund programs that utilize the 245 million cars that are already in use across the country.
